Winter Skin Care for Dry-Combination Skin After 50: The 5-Step Routine I Chose

If your skin behaves one way in summer and another in winter, you are not imagining it. Winter skin care after 50 is a different job, especially for combination skin like mine, which is olive-toned: with a little shine through the T-zone, drier cheeks, and dryness that takes over every winter. The heat comes on, the air turns dry, and skin that felt balanced in July starts to feel tight by the afternoon.
So this season I stopped guessing and built a simple routine around five premium products, one for each job. Nothing complicated, and nothing that takes more than a few quiet minutes. Here is what I chose and why.
My 5-step routine at a glance
1. Cleanser: Clinique All About Clean Liquid Facial Soap, Mild
2. Serum: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex
3. Daytime moisturizer: Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator
4. Night cream: Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair
5. Sunscreen: EltaMD UV Daily Hydration+ Broad-Spectrum SPF 50

Winter skin care after 50: why combination skin changes
Cold air outdoors and heated air indoors both pull moisture from the skin. Combination skin can be tricky in this season, because the T-zone may still look shiny while the cheeks feel dry and tight. That is why I look for lightweight hydration in the morning and something richer at night, instead of one heavy cream for the whole face.
My 5-step winter skin care routine
Step 1: A gentle cleanser
Clinique All About Clean Liquid Facial Soap, Mild
A cleanser should clean without leaving your skin feeling stripped, and that matters even more in winter. This one is made for dry-combination skin, it is fragrance-free, and it has a gentle lather. When you shop, make sure you choose the Mild version, since this soap also comes in other formulas.
Step 2: A hydrating serum
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex
Despite the name, this serum is not only for nighttime. It is a lightweight serum with hyaluronic acid for hydration, plus peptides, and it contains no retinol, so it can be used morning and night. It goes on right after cleansing and before your moisturizer.
Step 3: A lightweight daytime moisturizer
Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator
This one is lightweight, oil-free and fragrance-free, which makes it a sensible daytime choice for a face with dry cheeks and an oilier T-zone. It also wears well under makeup.
Step 4: A richer cream for winter nights
Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair
This is the winter piece of the routine. It is a richer, fragrance-free cream with ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which is exactly what I want when the air is dry and my cheeks feel it. Start with a small amount and focus on the driest areas, so the T-zone does not get more than it needs.
Step 5: Sunscreen, even in winter
EltaMD UV Daily Hydration+ Broad-Spectrum SPF 50
Winter sun is still sun. This sunscreen comes from a professional skincare brand and is formulated for normal, dry and combination skin. It has a transparent zinc oxide finish and hyaluronic acid, and it is fragrance-free. It goes on last in the morning, over your moisturizer.
How I put it together
Morning
- Cleanser
- Serum
- Moisture Surge
- Sunscreen
Evening
- Cleanser
- Serum
- Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair
Small winter habits that help
- Wash with lukewarm water instead of hot, which can leave skin feeling tight.
- Pat your face gently and apply your serum while your skin is still slightly damp.
- Run a humidifier in the bedroom if your home gets very dry.

Winter skin care after 50: quick answers
How should I adjust my skin care routine for winter?
Keep the morning light and the evening richer. A lightweight serum and moisturizer under sunscreen by day, and a creamier night cream focused on the driest areas at night, works well for combination skin.
Do I still need sunscreen in winter?
Yes. Winter sun is still sun, and daily broad-spectrum SPF is the last step of my morning routine all year.
Can I use the same serum morning and night?
The serum in this routine contains no retinol, so I use it morning and night, right after cleansing and before my moisturizer.
A gentle reminder
Introduce new products one at a time, and test a small area first. This is what I chose for my own skin type, and yours may be different. If your skin feels irritated, or you have a skin condition, please check with your dermatologist before changing your routine.
Skin care does not need to be a long project. Five products and a few quiet minutes, morning and night, is a small way of looking after yourself, and winter is when it counts. If you try any of these, I would love to hear how your skin responds.
